A system call interface is an interface through which control and operations are transferred between an application process and the operating system.

Before using system calls, application programs must execute certain preparatory code, especially to set the many parameters required by those calls. Therefore, this type of system call interface is also referred to as a Lottery Data Application Programming Interface (API).

From the perspective of program design, an API can be regarded as the interface between an application program and the operating system.
